Common Car Seat Installation Mistakes (And How Brooklyn Parents Can Avoid Them)
Even the most safety-conscious parents can run into trouble with car seat installation. As certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs), we see a few common missteps again and again — no matter where you live.
Here are 5 issues we frequently catch during appointments — and how Brooklyn parents can make sure they’re avoiding them:
1. The Seat Moves Too Much
Your car seat should not move more than one inch side-to-side or front-to-back when tested at the belt path. Always do the “tug test” after installation.
2. Harness Fit Isn’t Snug
The harness should pass the “pinch test” — if you can pinch any slack at the shoulder, it’s too loose. And don’t forget to position the chest clip at armpit level.
3. Recline Angle is Off (Especially for Newborns)
Most car seats have built-in recline indicators. Make sure the seat is reclined correctly to keep your child’s airway open — particularly important for newborns.
4. Switching to Forward-Facing Too Soon
Rear-facing is safest — even after your child turns 2. Most convertible seats accommodate rear-facing well beyond the toddler years.
5. Using Unapproved Accessories
If it didn’t come with your car seat or wasn’t approved by the manufacturer, don’t use it. Aftermarket products like strap covers or head supports can affect crash performance.
